Are you taking your O&G?

Seriously, don't get too excited about seeing my stuff, it always seems to look better on screen than it does IRL

For those who are interested I'm going to be doing another tournament blog for the Mansfield Maul which you can find here.

Yep, its O&G's for me, and then its demons for the Winter Incursion. I'm sure that your comment is not true. I generally find that everyones work looks better when you see it in the flesh, so to speak.

Ok, thought I'd best do an update.

Despite having planned to, at the very least, get on with drybrushing my bases with graveyard earth, I've got precisely zero painting done since the Maul. I have at least set the painting table up again, after it was put away while we were coping with the mountains of stuff that arrived
along with baby although there aren't actually any paints or brushes on it yet.

Have had some ideas for the joint Skaven army I'm doing with the wife but need time to figure out if they're within my modelling capability and I'm a bit stuffed for prepping stuff as I still don't have electric back in the shed so I can't use my fan heater to warm it up to a temperature suitable for undercoating.

I also haven't had a game since the Maul. I was supposed to have had one yesterday at one of the local games clubs but my opponent was ill so that's now postponed until next Thursday. Should be having a game tomorrow afternoon though all being well.

My next tournament will now be the side event at the Masters - decided to go to that as otherwise there weren't any singles tournaments in my preferrerd travel range/ticket cost until around June.

Bit of an update.

One thing I'm needing to sort out is the highlighting/shading on my models before I can get round to finish them off. While I know what I'm doing with the metals I'm having a bit of difficulty with my cloth.

Take a look at this picture below of 3 work in progress spearmen.

Image

And now tell me which spearmen have had shading applied to the blue cloth (albeit badly).

The correct answer is the one on the left and the one in the middle. The trouble is that the one in the middle looks practically indistinguishable from the one on the right.

I'm still using the Found Paint System paints I bought primarily because under their system you get sets of paint in the normal tone, shade and highlight. The problem I'm finding is that although when you view the wet paint in the pots side by side the difference is clear, when it's on the model (and this is after a few applications of the shade on the example model) it's barely distinguishable. (incidentally, the one on the left I painted with the Shade paint after adding a bit (too much) of Chaos Black)

While I'm under no illusions that I'm going to win the painting prize at a tournament any time soon (indeed, ever), I am concerned that I may get marked down at tournaments on painting because it doesn't look like I've done anything with the cloth. I'm a bit peeved as I bought the Foundry paints to save me having to mix shades and highlights from separate paints and now it looks like I'm going to have to do that in order to get the shade and highlight to show.

Have you tried washing the recesses with a watered down darker blue? I quite like Necron Abyss for the job. One thing you could try is going for very contrasting shading and highlighting. The foundry shade system can be quite subtle across the three shades with someof the paints. To get a good result on the table I tend to start with a a mid colour, shade quite dark and then do two or three highlights, starting from the mid colour. That way the shading takes care of itself and the key ares like the face can really pop out and draw the eye. It is also fairly quick. You can get away with just one highlight on the RnF models too (I think)

I must admit I've not tried washing the recesses yet. I was hoping that the Foundry paints would let me get away with just a quick highlight and shade for the bulk of the army and concentrate on better shading & highlights for the characters but it looks like that idea's a bust.

Poo. Checked through the last batches of models I'd undercoated. Everything from my Island of Blood set (plus the couple of additional units I'd bought elsewhere) and the Sanguinary Guard I bought to practice NMM on all show signs of the temp being too cold when I undercoated them. That means I've got somewhere in the region of 40 models to strip, reglue & sand and re-undercoat (if I can set up a suitable environment to do so).

Wouldn't be so bad if we didn't have the baby as it means I've going to have to try and get my paint stripping done at night and hope I can get the stink of the nail polish remover I use to do it out of the house overnight.

how did they end up looking, is it bumpy and dusty? if so then sometimes you can recover it by giving them a good scrub with a toothbrush or similar depending on how the spray has attached.
