Good Heavens! A decision

Postby cerebros » Thu Nov 05, 2009 9:57 am

Being very unlike me I've made a decision and am going to use the Foundry Deep Blue and Sky Blue paint sets for cloaks and cloth respectively.

I've been test painting a Phoenix Guard model (will try and remember to post a pic) with the sort of thing I'm thinking of and like it (plus I found it a lot, lot easier to do than white cloth) so I decided that's the way I'm going to go.

I decided to use the Foundry sets purely so that I don't have to worry about mixing the shades all the time and ending up with not terribly good matches between models in the same unit. Just hoping the paints arrive before the weekend so I can get cracking on finishing off this first set of Dragon Princes and then do a load more infantry to round out what I need there for my 1999 point list (although I could do with actually painting up a unit of Phoenix Guard in case I decide to switch back to them as my main block instead of White Lions).

To that end I started sorting out the next load of models last night - which meant having to rebase about 6 archers and 5 spearmen so they're on the slot right bases (as I got them all from ebay they've been put together by the previous owners and some of the archers weren't on diagonal bases and some of the spears weren't on the regular bases). Just need to stick the phoenix bit to the White Lion standard bearer's pole and base him and then dig out a set of command models for the spears/sea guard (whichever I decide to run them as), get that painted up and I think that'll be my infantry done for now.

Also have a mounted wizard and a foot wizard that I need to paint up, plus I need to chase my local store about ordering me some High Elf steeds and get them sorted. Once that's done I can finally get round to assembling my Noble/Prince set that the missus bought me for my birthday as well as the chariot set.

Poo! My new paints didn't arrive today. They'd better arrive tomorrow now I've started painting another unit of Archers, a half unit of spears and my White Lion command.

Let's see some picies! Know how you feel, my skaven stuff is still 'packing' according to maelstrom, which I must say I'm pretty disappointed about, from what I gather the stores get pre releases 3 days before their due date, before I've even recieved stuff a day before as a result, it's so annoying to be expecting something and not get it, I've got itchy toes waiting for it :P

Hows about that phoenix guard guy?:)

Well, as promised, here's my test Phoenix Guard. Not particularly my best effort but it was mainly to see if I liked the colours or not. Hopefully I can do a much neater job on my other figures

Not a bad scheme, although the base colour on the cloak may be a little too removed from the rest of it, maybe try mixing a little of your 2nd layer into your basecoat or visa versa?

It's always hard to tell these things till you've seen a few of them ranked up next to each other though.

Well it was only a test with the colours I had to hand. I now have my 2 sets of Foundry paints which I hope to start using this week. I needn't have panicked about not receiving them after all as I remembered my method for painting my HE requires me leaving cloth until last. Of the models I started painting last Wednesday I've got the hair and the initial coats on the armour done. Now I need to do a wash on the armour and hightlight, do the skin, leather etc and then I'll be ready for the cloth (although I suppose I could do the cloth on my DPs as that's about all that's left on them).

Having taken the Foundry paints out of the box I'm hoping that they look a bit more different to each other than they do when you compare the shades through the bottom of the pots - I had to read the labels to be sure which paint was which in the two sets.

I've now got to the stage where I can start using the Foundry paints and so have started base coating the cloth on a set of archers.

I think it's going to take me a while to get used to how much I need to water the Foundry paints down by as when I first tried it went too thin - it doesn't seem to need an awful lot at all judging by the pot I've started with.

Hopefully my back won't complain too much so I can get the models I'm working on finished this weekend (translating that for my normal speed of painting, by Boxing day) and then go back and redo the ones I've already done in white.

Well the Foundry pots may be 20ml as opposed to GW's 12ml, but I'm not sure they'll last longer as I can't seem to open the pots without getting tonnes all over my hands.

Anyway, have got the shade on the set of models I started last week.

Have made a fair bit of progress. Now have a single layer of the normal colour on all of the current batch I'm working on and a second layer on most of them, as well as a shade and normal layer on the mage I'm painting as well (although aside from the arms there's not a great deal on the cloak to apply shading to).

I've had to order a couple of new brushes as my 0 is a bit knackered and doesn't hold a point after a couple of sweeps over a model, and my 0000 also looks like it's on its ways out.

After hearing all about them from Dan, Wayne et al on various podcasts I've decided to give Windsor and Newton brushes a try, so I've ordered a replacement 0 and 000. Assuming these work out I'll also be buying a 2 as well since my current one also appears to be near the end of its life.

I'm also in the position of having a spare Stanley hand drill. Somehow I ended up ordering two when I only meant to order one (unfortunately it appears to be my error so I need to find someone who needs one). I bought with the aim of drilling holes in my knights to try and magnetise them so I can mount and dismount them from their horses for transport and storage as appropriate.

Finally, I've also now got a batch of Elven steeds and some High Elf shields to assemble and paint up. I got a bit fed up of my local store not getting back to me about ordering the bits from GW so I ordered direct.

Now just need to find time to assemble a test magnetised horse.
